Women's Tennis Downs Spartans For First Win

BOSTON, Mass.—Four different players finished 2-0, to lead UMass Boston women's tennis to their first win of the season Wednesday afternoon at the B.C. High Tennis Courts.

UMass Boston 7, Castleton University 2

(UMass Boston 1-8, LEC 1-7)

(Castleton 3-9, LEC 0-8)

UMass Boston swept doubles for the first time all season and won each of the bottom four singles matches, to help the Beacons claim their first overall and Little East Conference win.

Freshmen Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) and Chloe Gates (Plymouth, Mass.), senior Baila Mir (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Fatema Abdoo (Springfield, Mass.) all went 2-0 for the first time in their collegiate careers.

UMass Boston dominated across all three doubles matches to earn an early 3-0 advantage.

Mir and Abdoo opened the match by cruising to an 8-1 win at third doubles.

The Beacons pushed their lead to 2-0, when Moriarty and Gates knocked off Emily Miller and Becca Corsette 8-4 at second doubles.

UMass Boston finished off the sweep with a win at first doubles. Juniors Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) and Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, Wash.) defeated Megan Nadler and Kristen Kruk 8-2.

It would be more of the same to start singles play, as the Beacons quickly wrapped up the match victory.

Moriarty earned her second singles win in as many days, with a victory at third singles. After going down 5-0 in the first set to Miller, Moriarty rallied for a 7-5, 6-1 overall victory.

Gates closed out the win with a victory at fourth singles. She outlasted Corsette 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 to push the Beacons lead to 5-0.

Castleton earned their lone two points of the match at second and first doubles. Kruk defeated Tueme 6-4, 6-2 and Nadler earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Gauthier.

Mir stopped the Spartans momentum with a 6-2, 6-4 win at fifth singles.

In the final match of the day, Abdoo defeated Curley 8-2 in an abbreviated sixth-singles match.

  • Wednesday's contest marked the first-ever conference meeting between the Beacons and Spartans. UMass Boston earned their first-ever win against Castleton, after dropping the first three meetings.
  • Abdoo and Mir teamed up at third doubles for their first career doubles victory.
  • The Beacons win at second doubles, was their first win at that position all season long.
  • Interim head coach Kelsey Shea earned her first collegiate victory with the win.
  • Mir and Moriarty have each won two-straight singles matches.
  • Mir is now tied with Gauthier for the team lead with four singles victories.
