Women’s Tennis Drops Conference Match to Worcester State

BOSTON, Mass. – Fatema Abdoo (Springfield, Mass.) collected the lone win for women's tennis as the Beacons were handed an 8-1 Little East Conference loss by Worcester State University Saturday afternoon at the BC High School Tennis Courts.

THE BASICS

UMass Boston 1, Worcester State University 8

UMass Boston (0-5, 0-4 Little East Conference)
Worcester State U. (4-4, 3-1 Little East Conference)

HOW IT HAPPENED

To collect her first conference win of 2018, Abdoo had to go the distance against WSU's Victoria Konicki.  After dropping the first set by the final 7-6 (7-4), Abdoo bounced back in the second set with a commanding 6-2 victory.  She then powered past her opponent in the tiebreaker as she clinched the 10-8 victory.

Also, nearly picking-up a win in first doubles was the team of Katie Gauthier (West Boylston, Mass.) and Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, Wash.).  The duo forced a tiebreaker but fell just short as Worcester's Dominique Alves and Monika Mularski collected the tight 9-8 (10-8) win.

In singles play, the Lancers controlled five of the six matches from start to finish.  Gauthier and Tueme were handed 6-4, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 losses respectively.  Meaghan Moriarty (Norton, Mass.) dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision at third singles, while at fourth singles Chloe Gates (Plymouth, Mass.) fell by the finals of 6-2, 6-0.
