BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Maria Nasta (Andover, MA) racked up four points, including her third career hat trick to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's ice hockey team to an 8-0 victory over visiting Castleton State College this afternoon in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest at the Clark Athletic Center rink on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 9-7-0 overall and 7-4-0 in ECAC East play, while the Spartans fall to 3-11-1 and 3-7-1.
Nasta now has 108 career points, including 101 in a UMass Boston uniform to become the third player in school history to reach the 100-point plateau. Nasta collected seven points in her freshman season with New England College.
Nasta's three goals all came in the final period for the Beacons and were the last three goals of the afternoon. Junior forward Lauren Duran (Woburn, MA) and junior defenseman Jazz Webber (Winslow, ME) set up her first score at 5:20 of the third period on the power play, before sophomore forward Sam Phillips (Scottsdale, AZ) found her just over three minutes later at the 8:33 mark for her second tally of the day. Nasta's hat trick and team-leading ninth goal of the season came at 16:45 with a shorthanded marker on another assist from Phillips to make it 8-0.
Webber opened the scoring for UMass Boston with her second tally of the year coming on a helper from senior defenseman Amanda Cianciulli (Billerica, MA) and junior forward Rachel Sousa (Woburn, MA) at 9:55 of the first period. It would be the Beacons' only goal of the frame.
Junior blueliner Hannah Davis (Oakdale, MN) provided most of the offense in the second period for UMass Boston with a pair of power play goals. The first came when Nasta and Sousa combined on the assist at 6:18 of the period on a five on three advantage and the second gave the Beacons a 3-0 margin at 8:47, courtesy of an assist from Duran and Sousa. Senior defenseman Sandy Parlato (Needham, MA) capped the period for the Beacons with her second goal of the season coming with just 23 seconds left on the clock.
Junior forward Katie Kirwan (Centerville, MA) fed classmate Kristen Smith (Beavercreek, OH) for her third goal of the campaign on a four on four situation just 2:02 into the third period for a 5-0 UMass Boston advantage.
Sophomore goalie Leah Hallett (Rocky Hill, CT) turned away 14 shots to earn her third career shutout for the Beacons, while freshman goaltender Katharyn Dembowski (Elkridge, MD) made 56 saves for Skidmore, which was outshot, 64-14 on the afternoon.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Friday, January 22 when it travels to Gorham, ME to take on ECAC East foe University of Southern Maine at 4:00 p.m., while the Spartans get back to action tomorrow in Worcester, MA with a 2:00 p.m. contest at College of the Holy Cross.
