PAWTUCKET, R.I.—After helping lead UMass Boston men's tennis to the Little East Conference Tournament Title, doubles partners Miguel Beltran (Ashland, Mass.) and Nandish Shah (Ahmedabad, India) were named the Little East Conference Player and Rookie of the Week.
The pair went a perfect 2-0 on the week at number one doubles, with both players adding a key singles victory. The duo teamed up for an 8-4 win in doubles against #4 UMass Dartmouth, before cruising past #2 Salem State's pairing by an 8-2 score.
Beltran earns his second career weekly honor, after being named the LEC Rookie of the Week one time as a freshman. The sophomore was named the Most Outstanding Player of the LEC Tournament after going 3-0 on the week, including 2-0 in the LEC Title Match. He took the first set 6-1 at number two singles against UMass Dartmouth, before the Beacons clinched the match win. On Saturday, Beltran clinched the LEC Title with a 6-2, 6-0 win at number two singles.
Shah collects his fourth LEC Rookie of the Week award after going a perfect 3-0 on the week. The freshman won his singles match 6-4, 6-0 at number one singles in the LEC Semifinals. On the season, Shah leads all players with his three LEC Player of the Week awards and four LEC Rookie of the Week honors.
UMass Boston will travel to Amherst College on Friday to take on Stevens Institute of Technology in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament. The start time for the match has yet to be announced.
