Volleyball Sweeps On First Day of Captains Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – With a record setting performance by Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) and a strong offensive day by Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass.) volleyball earned their first 2-0 start since 2010 as they downed UW-Platteville 3-0, and Stevenson University, 3-2 Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After taking a solid game one win over the Pioneers in the first match, the Beacons had to battle back-and-forth with Stevenson, who was an NCAA Regional Tournament champion in 2015.

In their first match of the day, Koen led the Beacons offense with 10 kills, while Pepper Baker (Tallahassee, Fla.) fueled the offense with 14 assists.  UMass grabbed a 25-17 win in the first, while in the second they battled back from as much as seven point to earn a 28-26 victory.  The third set saw UMB pound out a 25-20 win to earn their first win of 2016. 

Glavan and Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) combined for 32 digs respectively, with Shi also scoring eight kills.  Freshman Sarah Doyle (Glendale, Calif.) had a huge debut for the Beacons as she scored nine kills on 18 attempts to finish with a .444 hitting percentage.

The nightcap saw Glavan post an impressive 42 digs, breaking her old program record of 39 that she set as a sophomore against Haverford College. 

Once again it was Koen leading the offense as the senior hitter scored 17 kills in the victory.  Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) and Melanie Fyda (Park Ridge, Ill.) also got in on the action as they finished with 12 and 13 kills respectively.  Baker had a strong match with her 36 assists, while sophomore setter put-up 22 helpers.  At the net, the Beacons defense combined for two solo blocks and 14 block assists, with Doyle and Fyda each scoring four block assists.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • With the day one sweep UMB improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2010, when they defeated Hardin Simmons and Whitworth at the Trinity University (TX) Invite
  • The Beacons averaged 13.63 kills, 12.50 assists, 1.98 blocks, and 19.38 digs per set in their 2-0 day
  • The meeting with UW-Platteville marked the first-ever between the Beacons and the Pioneers
  • Friday's meeting marked the second ever between UMB and Stevenson and was their first-ever win over the Mustangs

The Beacons will close out the Captains Classic tomorrow when they face Lawrence University at 2 p.m. and Christopher Newport University at 4 p.m.
