UMass Boston Hosts Cops for Kids with Cancer Volleyball Tournament

BOSTON, Mass. - UMass Boston's Division of Athletics and Recreation, Special Projects and Programs, Office of Community Relations, and the Boston Police Department raised nearly $8,000 during the first-ever Cops for Kids with Cancer Volleyball Tournament in the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday.

Members of the Boston Police Department, Boston Fire Department, UMass Boston, Boston College, and different organizations from surrounding towns and cities made up the 12 teams that took part in the tournament.

"It was great being a part of such a great event," said Oderra Jones, community outreach and engagement coordinator for the Division of Athletics and Recreation, Special Programs and Projects. "Any time we're able to combine a special event with our student athletes, it's always exciting."

UMass Boston's women's volleyball team served as referees. All the matches were competitive, but it was the UMass Boston team led by Coordinator of Community Services Alkia Powell that won the championship trophy.

"UMass Boston was proud to partner with Cops for Kids with Cancer and host the 2017 volleyball fundraiser here on campus," said Phil Carver, UMass Boston's director of community relations. "Cops for Kids with Cancer is a phenomenal nonprofit that helps a minimum of six families a month deal with the financial hardships brought on as a result of the illness."

The Cops for Kids with Cancer organization is a group of law enforcement officials and officers whose purpose is to raise money for families dealing with children with cancer. As many people know, once a child or anyone is diagnosed with cancer, things can dramatically change for the families. The focus of Cops for Kids with Cancer is to help those families with some of the bills they may incur while trying to care for a sick child, whether that's transportation costs, medical costs, or other costs that may come up.
